Paul O'Brien
Paul Lives on Vancouver Island in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The city of Victoria is unique within Canada. The mild climate means not too many mosquitos in the summer and virtually no snow! Working still as a teacher in a High School, the remaining time is spent writing and performing. Since coming to the Island Paul has rekindled his love of traditional Irish music and accompanies Calvin Cairns who is one of Canada's finest fiddle players, who has just recorded a new album with Paul, and can be obtained at Calvins website, www.calvincairns.com
Paul recorded Sacred Lines in 2006 with English producer Joby Baker. Joby is also an adoptee of Victoria, and has received Juno nominations for past production credits, inlcuding one for producing one of Canada's best folk bands The Bills, for their album Let Em Run. Plans are under way for Paul to start work on a new solo album in 2007 and also a instrumental album with Calvin Cairns.Joby has also produced Juno award winner Alexis Puentes.Family life also plays a huge role in Paul's life. Paul and his wife Louise have three children. Paul coaches the two boys in their local soccer team and his daughter Millie who is featured on the new album is a really keen actress. All three children, Cormac, Fin and Millie sing on the song , Path of History off the album.Cormac plays a mean piano and trumpet, as does Fin, and Millie is a great flute player.
Other new projects include working with local author Daryl Asby who has just written a book about the first successful independent European settler on Vancouver Island. John Muir and his family moved to Fort Victoria from Kilmarnock in the 1850's. Paul plans to do some joint readings/performances with Daryl.
